U.S. Census Bureau

The percentage of households in Monroe County that self-responded in the Census Bureau’s 2020 count of the U.S. population hit 82.9 percent, the highest rate among the 102 Illinois counties, the federal agency reported.

Right behind Monroe were McHenry and Kendall counties, whose self-response rate stood at 82.3 percent. In each jurisdiction, 99.9 percent of households ultimately reported the number of residents occupying the homes, according to the Census Bureau.

In Monroe County, the bureau had to send census takers to only 17 percent of the households to complete the survey due to a lack of initial response, the bureau reported. For McHenry and Kendall, the follow-up rate was 17.6 percent, according to the bureau.

In Cook County, the self-response rate was 67.4 percent, the 69th highest self-reporting rate in the state. And for Illinois as a whole, the rate was 71.4 percent, which represented the seventh best showing of any of the 50 states and Washington, D.C., the bureau reported.

The names of the people who respond to Census Bureau questions are not made public, and the bureau by law can only use the data to generate statistical information, the agency said. The information cannot be used by either courts or public agencies against the interests of citizens.

The Census Bureau data, which is generated every 10 years, will be used to redistrict political boundaries within states and to help determine the allocation of federal funds for an array of programs.
