President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion stimulus plan includes a provision Democrats have been fighting for since what seems like forever.
Tucked away inside the mammoth measure that was recently signed into law is a provision that would grant parents a monthly check of up to $300 per child.
And Democrats are hoping to make the emergency adjustment brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic a regular occurrence.
As presently crafted, more than 93% of children, or 69 million individuals, would receive benefits under the plan that carries a one-year price-tag that tops $100 billion.
Though some estimates project that the plan could cut child poverty by as much as 45%, not everyone is on board with it.
Welfare critics argue it could erase gains that have been made in the never-ending war. Before the pandemic, child poverty was recorded to be at a new low and opponents of the plan insist a child allowance could reverse that trend by reducing incentives to work.
