The effective state and local tax rate for median Illinois households now exceeds 15 percent – almost three times the rate for the state with the lowest levies – according to a ranking published by the financial-services website WalletHub.
Illinois’ 15.01 percent rate for median households is the highest for all 50 states and the District of Columbia, the study released this month states. The state and local tax burdens evaluated by WalletHub included property taxes, vehicle levies, income taxes, and sales and excise taxes.
Illinois’ property tax came in at 7.82 percent, the second highest in the nation, and average Illinois residents pay the third highest gasoline taxes in the nation, the researchers found. The sales and excise tax burden was the 27th highest, according to WalletHub, while the state came in 13th highest for its income tax rate.
While average American households pay a uniform amount in federal income taxes on April 15 – $8,800 – residents in low-tax states may pay three times less than those in the most expensive states, including New York and Connecticut, the study said.
WalletHub compared the local and state tax rates to corresponding national median values on income, vehicles and real estate to determine relative tax obligations.
