Illinois House Republicans have announced their opposition to proposed service and delivery taxes, as well as any additional tax increases anticipated during the upcoming veto session. This announcement was made on the social media platform X.

According to Illinois House Republicans, the fall veto session is scheduled in two three-day blocs, traditionally used to address gubernatorial vetoes but increasingly serving as a venue for late-session policy discussions. The Republican caucus views this period as a potential flashpoint for tax increases, referencing recent Democratic budgets and revenue debates. The sessions are scheduled for October 14–16 and October 28–30, 2025. Parallel discussions highlight transit funding, energy measures, and other topics that could lead to revenue talks, intensifying GOP opposition to new burdens such as service and delivery taxes on households and small businesses.

The caucus preview explicitly lists the two veto-session weeks. A statewide proposal discussed in 2025 would introduce a flat $1.50 "delivery tax" on most packages, drawing bipartisan criticism in regional reporting. Republican legislators warn that Democrats may also pursue expansions of service taxes. These specific proposals underpin the Republicans' commitment to resisting revenue hikes they argue would exacerbate affordability pressures amid rising household costs.

Independent tax benchmarks indicate that Illinois' overall competitiveness lags behind its peers. The Tax Foundation ranks the state 37th on its 2025 State Business Tax Climate Index, reflecting relatively high burdens across multiple tax types. Property taxes remain a significant issue; national tables place Illinois among those with the highest effective rates in the country. These data points provide external validation for arguments that new taxes—whether on services or deliveries—could further undermine affordability and the business climate.

The IL House GOP represents Republican members in the 104th General Assembly of the Illinois House of Representatives. Based in Springfield, it advocates policies focused on fiscal restraint, public safety, and regulatory reform and serves as a primary legislative counterbalance to Democratic control of statewide offices and the General Assembly. The caucus communicates through legislative initiatives, blogs, and public statements to influence debate on taxes, spending, and governance in Illinois.
