Former House Republican Floor Leader Peter Breen is hoping voters aren’t too worn down to take notice of what he thinks is clearly in front of them.
“There is a real divide in candidates,” Breen told the DuPage Policy Journal of the upcoming April 6 elections. “You are seeing the Democrats run very hard-left candidates for nearly every township and local government position. These are not your father’s Democrats. These are not moderates; they’re running on an AOC-styled, Democratic Socialist platform.”
Breen said he just hopes after the 2020 presidential election and all the controversy that followed it weary voters are still paying attention.
“Local races, to some extent, are more important than national races because property tax rates are set by local government and the quality and nature of services are set by local government," he said. “A good local government can help a community be a great place to live while a Socialist left-wing local government can make a community a much less desirable place to live.”
Breen added he’s seeing all the warning signs from the Democratic candidates he’s come across that are on the April 6 ballot.
In one instance, a candidate for the River Forest school board dropped out of the race amid claims of harassment by a teachers' union-backed candidate.
Sources told the West Cook News that supporters of Sarah Eckmann sent disparaging letters to the employer of Scott Hall as well as to a nonprofit preschool where he sits on the board.
“The people I’m seeing at the local level from the left are not people that want to keep things status quo,” Breen added. “They very much want to move things hard left. I see a group of candidates that local government should really be concerned about. This year, depending on how elections go, you can see your community, school board or township take a change for the worse or better.”
Breen said he’d pretty much offer the same advice to any voter planning to take part on Election Day.
“The Democrats you’re seeing are really hard, hard Democrats,” he said. “I would say you can keep yourself safe by choosing the Republican candidate.”
