Chicago’s combined sales tax rate – municipal, county and state – is now tied for the second highest among U.S. cities with populations of at least 200,000, according to a new analysis by the Tax Foundation.
The 10.25% rate, which is equal to that of Fremont, California; Long Beach, California; Oakland, California; and Seattle, Washington, consists of a 6.25% state sales tax rate, a 1.75% county rate; a 1.25% city rate, as well as a 1% tax for the Regional Transportation Authority, the Civic Federation reports.
Nationwide, the Tax Foundation found that 23 large cities now have combined sales tax rates of 9% or more. Differences in tax rates between Chicago and its suburbs lead consumers who live in the city to do their shopping beyond municipal borders or online, the analysis found.
Cities’ combined sales tax rates range from 10.3% in Tacoma, Washington to 0% in Anchorage and Portland, Oregon, according to the Tax Foundation.
Over the past two years, 15 large cities moved to increase their combined state and local sales tax rate by 0.25 percentage points, the report said, with the majority of those increases taking place in the first six months of 2021.
