Illinois ranked 15th-highest among the 50 states and the District of Columbia in a ranking by the personal finance website MoneyGeek that calculated average amounts of credit card debt by location.
As of the third quarter of 2020, Illinois’ average credit card balance stood at $5,365, according to MoneyGeek and Experian. In contrast, in the second quarter of 2021, the average cardholder in the United States had a credit card debt of $5,668, the study found.
Credit card balances for all Americans in Q2 2021 stood at $787 billion, which is below what it was just prior to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. For Q1 2020, the total credit card balances in the U.S. amounted to $893 billion, according to MoneyGeek.
Americans 75 and older have the highest credit card debt ($8,100), while those under 35 years old posted average debts of $3,700, based on 2019 data.
Alaska recorded the highest average credit card debt per person in Q3 2020, while Iowa posted the lowest level of credit card debt.
