Bailey for Illinois has issued the following press release:
LOUISVILLE, IL – State Senator and Republican frontrunner for Governor Darren Bailey says the only way for Illinois to end its reign as the state with the highest state and local taxes in the nation and lift up working families is to get serious about reducing state spending.
A new report from WalletHub shows Illinois to now be the highest taxed state in the country. According to the report, Illinois residents pay more than 15 percent of their income in state and local taxes with an average household cost of $9,488 per year.
In fact, Illinois’ tax burden is nearly 39% higher than the national average and Illinois has the second highest gas taxes in the country and the second highest property taxes, according to the report.
“Working families need tax relief and economic opportunities and Pritzker is failing to deliver,” Bailey said. “We are never going to see the kind of growth we need to turn our state around until we lower taxes. People are leaving Illinois in droves and families and businesses are struggling with high taxes and rising utility fees. Unfortunately, we have a Governor who wants to bury his head in the sand, push an extreme national agenda, and pretend these problems don’t exist. But ignoring the challenges facing our state won’t make them go away.”
Bailey said the only way Illinois can begin to get our state growing again is to lower taxes, reduce state spending, and reduce the size of government.
“Illinois has nearly 7,000 units of local government – more than any other state,” Bailey said. “We should not really be all that surprised that our tax burden is the highest in the country when there are so many layers of government and bureaucracy in our state. We need to look at ways to reduce spending and reduce the size of government in our state so we can provide working Illinoisans the tax relief they need and deserve.”
