In a May 24 tweet, gubernatorial candidate and Sen. Darren Bailey (R-Louisville) announced his participation in WGN/Nextar debate that night.

"I’ll be participating in tonight’s WGN/Nexstar main card debate at 7 PM. Use the link to find out how you can tune in. There’s an undercard debate Democrat @RichardIrvin4IL is choosing to participate in because he’s afraid to go toe to toe with me. #twill,” Bailey tweeted.

Bailey, businessman Gary Rabine and venture capitalist Jesse Sullivan were to meet for one hour starting at 7 p.m.

Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin declined to participate, he did however participate in another debate that night with former state Sen. Paul Schimpf and attorney and minister Max Solomon.

Irvin has skipped several Republican candidate debates. Politico described Irvin's strategy as "duck duck debates" in April.
