Illinois residents, on average, now pay $5.40 for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline, the sixth highest average gas price among all 50 states and the District of Columbia, according to a June 6 report from AAA.
Last week, AAA reported that the price per gallon in the Prairie state surged by 41 cents on average, representing the second largest weekly increase in the nation. The national average gas price increased 25 cents over the same period to $4.86 per gallon.
AAA said that the cost of a barrel of oil is close to $120, nearly double what it was last August, as worldwide demand continues to rise amid tight global supply lines. Travel on the Memorial Day weekend was robust, further pushing up domestic gasoline demand, AAA reported.
Volatile oil prices and higher demand mean pump prices will continue to be elevated for the time being, according to the AAA report. The national average price for regular gas was up by $1.81 over the same time last year.
The average price of a gallon of diesel fuel in Illinois – $5.493 – was more in line with the national average price for diesel, AAA reported.
