The Winnebago Sheriff’s Department arrested 420 people for driving under the influence last year, the highest number of DUI arrests among Illinois counties, according to an activist group’s annual DUI survey.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Department had the second highest DUI arrest numbers (338), the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists (AAIM) said in an annual survey released July 14. The arrest rate per deputy in Winnebago County was 3.44, compared to 2.7 per deputy in Lake County.

Cook County’s Sheriff's Department was down the list at No. 19 with 65 arrests, but its DUI arrest rate was near the bottom at 0.12 per deputy, AAIM reported. In Chicago, whose numbers are kept separate from other Illinois municipalities due to the city’s size, the number of DUI arrests in 2021 stood at 1,622, which equates to an arrest rate of 0.14 per officer.

Among all other cities in Illinois, Decatur has the highest number of DUI arrests (353), while Aurora was second with 325 arrests last year, according to AAIM.

The alliance reported that it surveyed almost 700 law enforcement organizations in the state and that 82% responded. The Sheriff’s Department with the highest DUI arrest rate was Jersey (7.64 per deputy), while among municipalities, Franklin Park captured the top spot (5.54 arrests per sworn officer).
