Senator Darren Bailey (R-Newton) recently reminded his supporters of the "sales tax holiday" that began earlier this month.
The "Back to School" tax holiday is a ten-day period from August 5, 2022, to August 14, 2022, when customers can buy specific clothes and school-related products at a lower sales tax rate of 1.25%, according to an informational bulletin from the Illinois Department of Revenue.
"Starting tomorrow! More details on what's included and excluded in the sales tax holiday," Bailey wrote on Facebook.
During the tax holiday, retailers will be required to modify their sales tax collection methods in order to collect the lower tax rate applied to qualifying items during the tax holiday.
Qualifying items include shoes and clothing with a retail price of less than $125 per item, as well as certain school supplies. School supplies are not subject to the $125 limit.
A complete list of qualifying items can be found in the Illinois Department of Revenue's informational bulletin.
According to a Chalkbeat Chicago report, this tax holiday was part of the $1.8 billion tax relief plan submitted by Governor J.B. Pritzker (D-Il) during the spring legislative session and later approved by the general assembly.
Chalkbeat Chicago also notes that this tax cut takes place during a time when inflation rates have reached 9.1%, prompting increases in the cost of gasoline, food and utilities.
