Illinois state Rep. Dan Brady (R-Bloomington) is urging drivers to be careful as the start of the school year means more buses are on the roads taking children to and from their schools.

"It's back to school time,” Brady wrote in an Aug. 22 Facebook post. “Please be extra cautious sharing the road with buses."

Brady also shared a link to a news release on his website.

"School is back in session for many children,” the release stated. “Getting on and off the school bus is the most dangerous part of the ride for students. Make sure you pay close attention when sharing the road with school buses, stay patient, and keep an eye out for children."

He also shared a link to a WGN article that explored the rules regarding sharing the road with school buses.

Suggestions from the article included watching for flashing lights on a bus which typically means the driver is getting ready to stop and pick up or drop off students. The article also noted the penalties for illegally passing a school bus, which consists of a minimum fine of $300 and a three-month driver’s license suspension. The penalties increase to a minimum of $1,000 and a one-year driver’s license suspension for a second offense. Each infraction could also impact a driver's insurance premium.

The Illinois School Board of Education published school bus safety information on its website.
