Republican gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey's fall bus tour continued this week with a story about Nathan Hale, who was hanged by the British.

Hale was a Connecticut resident who joined a Connecticut regiment during the Revolutionary War and surged to the rank of captain in 1776, a report from Biography said. He was taken prisoner by the British in New York City and executed on charges of espionage on Sept. 22, 1776.

"Parents, I have a challenge for you," Bailey said in a video posted on Facebook. "Get your children's history books and see if that story about Nathan Hale is in there. It should be. I might have a - I have a feeling it might not be. Look that up, check it out and get back with us. God bless you. We'll be seeing you on the trail. Keep up the good work. We're winning. We're gonna fire JB Pritzker. We're gonna get those stories of our history back in our history books! God bless and thank you."

In the video, Bailey's wife Cindy read the day's devotional and shared the anecdote of Nathan Hale, quoting his famous words: "'I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.'"

Bailey, the Republican nominee for governor, will face incumbent JB Pritzker in the November election.
