In an Oct. 12 Facebook post, gubernatorial candidate Sen. Darren Bailey (R-Louisville) saluted farmers on National Farmers Day.

“Agriculture is one of Illinois’ top employers and industries,” Bailey posted on Facebook. “As a farmer myself, I have a deep appreciation for Illinois agriculture. Thank you to all of the hardworking farmers across the state who help fuel our economy and feed the world!"

Bailey is going up against incumbent Gov. J.B. Pritzker for the governor’s seat in November.

Bailey is a third generation farmer and lifelong Illinois resident. He and his sons own and operate Bailey Family Farm.

The Department of Agriculture conducts a census of farmers every five years. According to the Farmers' Almanac, "the latest census data shows that the majority of farmers are older (average age: 58+), there are also more young men, women, and minority farmers than ever before. You may be surprised to learn that 97.1% of farms in America are family farms—family-owned and family-operated."
