WIU School of AFED to Host Accounting Challenge for Local Highschool and College Students

The Western Illinois University School of Accounting, Finance, Economics and Decision Sciences (AFED), in collaboration Beta Alpha Psi (BAP), will host an Accounting Challenge event for local high school and community college students Friday, March 31 on campus.


The Accounting Challenge is a half-day event designed to teach students the importance and relevance of accounting in business while hearing from accounting professionals from various organizations. Professionals will discuss today's business world and provide students with hands-on experiences and team-building activities. In addition, students will compete in an accounting competition for knowledge for a chance to earn a scholarship toward attending WIU in Accounting. 

The challenge schedule includes:

  • 8:30-9 a.m.- Students check in at registration desk, Stipes
  • 8:30-9 a.m.- Donuts & drinks, Stipes Student Lounge
  • 9-9:30 a.m.- Challenge Begins with "Welcome and Introduction to Accounting," Stipes 121
  • 9:30-10:30 a.m.- Leadership/Team building activity, Stipes 121
  • 10:30-11:20 a.m.- Accounting Challenge skills test, Stipes 121
  • 11:20-11:30 a.m.- Short break
  • 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.- Professional accounting presentation, Stipes 121
  • 12:30-1 p.m.- Awards ceremony, recognition of scholarship recipients

Following the event, students are invited to stay for a question-and-answer session with BAP members.Students who participate in the challenge will benefit from career development; compete to earn scholarships; participate in team-building activities and gain university and career opportunities.The Accounting Challenge is sponsored by the WIU School of Accounting, Finance, Economics and Decision Sciences (AFED), the WIU chapter of Beta Alpha Psi (BAP) and the WIU chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA). BAP is an honorary organization for financial information students and professionals. Scholarships are provided by the WIU Accounting Foundation.Registration is required for the challenge and participation is free. The deadline to register is Friday, March 24.
