WASHINGTON – On June 8, 2023, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted to advance two circuit court nominations to the full Senate: Judges Ana de Alba to the Ninth Circuit and Irma Carrillo Ramirez to the Fifth Circuit.

“We continued our work advancing highly qualified, diverse candidates to lifetime appointments on the federal bench at our executive business meeting. The two nominees advanced today – including one who would be the first Latina to serve on the Fifth Circuit – are accomplished litigators and jurists that will help ensure a fair justice system for all. I look forward to the full Senate having the opportunity to vote to confirm them,” said U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The Committee voted to advance the following nominees with the indicated vote totals:

  • Ana de Alba, to be United States Circuit Judge for the Ninth Circuit: 11-10; and
  • Irma Carrillo Ramirez, to be United States Circuit Judge for the Fifth Circuit: approved by voice vote.
Today’s executive business meeting continues the Committee’s work filling judicial vacancies with highly qualified, diverse candidates who help ensure the fair and impartial administration of the American justice system. Under the leadership of Chair Durbin, the Senate has confirmed 130 judges to lifetime appointments on the federal bench during the Biden administration.
