WASHINGTON – U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and U.S. Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA) today released the following statement after the United States Supreme Court ruled in a 5-to-4 decision that Alabama had diluted the power of Black voters and violated theVoting Rights Act by drawing a congressional voting map with a single district in which they made up a majority:
“The Court’s decision today to affirm decades of precedent and uphold the District Court’s order striking down Alabama’s illegal congressional maps is a long overdue step to protect the rights of Black voters in that state and across the country.
“While this decision preserves an important provision of the Voting Rights Act, other key provisions remain severely diminished by the Court’s reckless assault on the Voting Rights Act over the past decade. We will continue our work to reintroduce the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to fully restore the Voting Rights Act and ensure that all Americans have equal opportunities to participate in our democracy.”
