Springfield, Ill- The Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal (OSFM) is raising awareness about the seriousness of the crime of arson during Arson Awareness Week (May 5-11). This year's theme is Protecting Houses of Worship Against Arson.

According to the United States Fire Administration (USFA), intentional actions accounted for 15% of fires in places of worship in recent years. Illinois State Fire Marshal James A. Rivera emphasized the importance of fire safety measures in houses of worship, stating, "I encourage all congregations in houses of worship to host a fire safety day."

Rivera further advised on practical steps to enhance safety, including collaborating with local fire departments to develop fire escape plans and conducting building inspections. Additionally, he recommended hosting cleanup days to remove potential fire hazards and engaging with local law enforcement to address security vulnerabilities.

The OSFM's Division of Arson, comprising specialized personnel and Accelerant Detection Canines, plays a crucial role in investigating and preventing arson incidents. In 2023, the Division closed 44 arson-related cases, highlighting their dedication to combating this crime.

To promote community involvement in preventing arson, a statewide Arson Hotline has been established for citizens to report suspicious fire-related activities anonymously. Additionally, the Youth Firesetter Intervention Program offers resources for addressing fire-setting behavior in young individuals.

To reduce the risk of arson, practical tips include maintaining clear spaces around buildings, securing flammable materials, and promptly reporting any suspicious behavior to authorities.
