Galatia Community Unit School District 1 Board of Education met Tuesday, May 21.

The regular meeting of the Galatia Community Unit School District No. 1 Board was held in the boardroom at the Annex. Roll call was taken, and those present were Elaine Jackson, Bryan McCabe, Holly Murphy, and Amy Richey. Tim Pribble, B. J. Pigg, and Leslie Ferrell were absent. Four (4) members present and three (3) members absent. Vice President, Bryan McCabe, called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Also present: Superintendent, Shain Crank, HS Principal, Ashley Launius, and Recording Secretary, Michele Hankins.
Vice President McCabe led the Board and attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance.
VISITORS:
There were no visitors.
ADDITIONS/DELETIONS TO AGENDA:
FBLA field trip to Holiday World, Santa Claus, IN on May 24th, 2024. FFA overnight trip to the FFA Convention, Springfield on June 11-13 QNS Quote for server infrastructure and computer equipment.
EXECUTIVE SESSION:
1. A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Jackson to enter Executive Session at 7:01 p.m. to discuss the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees of the public body or legal counsel for the public body, including hearing testimony on a complaint lodged against an employee of the public body or against legal counsel for the public body to determine its validity; matters of student discipline or review executive session minutes. McCabe-aye, Jackson-aye, Murphy-aye, and Richey-aye. Four (4) ayes, motion carried.
2. A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Murphy to end Executive Session at 7:23 p.m. Jackson-aye, Murphy-aye, Richey-aye, and McCabe-aye. Four (4) ayes, motion carried.
3. A motion was made by Jackson and seconded by Richey to approve the Executive Session minutes.

JH Scholar Bowl Coach
4. A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Jackson to approve Amanda Avery as the junior high scholar bowl coach for the 2024/2025 school year. Murphy-aye, McCabe-aye, Richey-aye, and Jackson- aye. Four (4) ayes, motion carried.
HS Scholar Bowl Coach
5. A motion was made by Murphy and seconded by McCabe to approve Adam Neal as the high school scholar bowl coach for the 2024/2025 school year. McCabe-aye, Murphy-aye, Richey-aye, and Jackson- aye. Four (4) ayes, motion carried.
Elementary School Teacher
6. A motion was made by Richey and seconded by McCabe to employ Rhonda Beckman as an elementary teacher for the 2024/2025 school year per salary schedule, and pending background check. Richey-aye, Jackson-aye, Murphy-aye, and McCabe-aye. Four (4) ayes, motion carried.

Elementary Permanent Substitute
7. A motion was made by Richey and seconded by McCabe to employ Melissa Kragness as a full-time elementary permanent substitute teacher for the 2024/2025 school year, per base salary. Murphy-aye, McCabe-aye, Richey-aye, and Jackson-aye. Four (4) ayes, motion carried.

8. A motion was made by Richey and seconded by Murphy to employ Kinzee Wilson as a full-time elementary permanent substitute teacher for the 2024/2025 school year, per base salary and pending background check. Murphy-aye, McCabe-aye, Richey-aye, and Jackson-aye. Four (4) ayes, motion carried.
High School English Teacher
9. A motion was made by Richey and seconded by McCabe to employ Madeleine Miller as a high school English teacher for the 2024/2025 school year, per salary schedule and pending background check. McCabe-aye, Murphy-aye, Richey-aye, and Jackson-aye. Four (4) ayes, motion carried.
Junior High Special Education Substitute Teacher
10. A motion was made by Richey and seconded by Jackson to employ Blaire Mayberry as a junior high special education substitute teacher for the 2024/2025 school year, per salary schedule and pending background check. Richey-aye, Murphy-aye, McCabe-aye, and Jackson-aye. Four (4) ayes, motion carried.
Collective Bargaining Agreement
11. A motion was made by Richey and seconded by McCabe to approve the four-year (FY24/25, 25/26, 26/27, 27/28) Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Galatia CUSD #1 and the Galatia Education Association of Teachers, as presented. McCabe-aye, Murphy-aye, Richey-aye, and Jackson-aye. Four (4) ayes, motion carried.
Central Office Secretary
12. A motion was made by Jackson and seconded by Murphy to employ Heather Anderson as a part time central office secretary along with other duties as the district technology coordinator for 200 days at $20.00/hr. starting July 1st, 2024. Richey-aye, Jackson-aye, Murphy-aye, and McCabe-aye. Four (4) ayes, motion carried.
Resolution Authorizing Superintendent to Act on Behalf of the District
13. A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Richey to approve the resolution authorizing the superintendent to act on behalf of the district as presented, to correct a payroll error regarding Medicare on TRS. Richey-aye, Murphy-aye, McCabe-aye, and Jackson-aye. Four (4) ayes, motion carried.
JH/HS Volleyball Coach
14. A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Jackson to employ Julia Mattingly as the junior high and high school volleyball coach for the 2024/2025 school year. Richey-aye, Murphy-aye, McCabe-aye, and Jackson-aye. Four (4) ayes, motion carried.
JH Softball Coach
15. A motion was made by Murphy and seconded by McCabe to employ Kara Leverett as the junior high softball coach for the 2024/2025 school year. Jackson-aye, Murphy-aye, McCabe-aye, and Richey-aye. Four (4) ayes, motion carried.
PRINCIPAL REPORT:
SISHA Banquet: The SISHSA (Southern Illinois Society for High School Achievement) was held at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, IL on May 1st. Six seniors attended the banquet, Owen Campbell, Emma Stricklin, Ian Irvin, Perrin Miller, Jada Rogers, and Dane Jenkins.
Scholarship Night was held on May 6th. There was $71,500 scholarship money awarded.
JH/HS Honor's assembly was held on May 16th. Mrs. Douglass did a great job coordinating the honor's assembly.
The seniors did their "Senior Send Off" at the grade school after their graduation practice on May 16th. All Galatia Seniors graduated!!!
Shout out: Mr. Arnold, Mr. Richey and the Ag class went above and beyond their job duties by taking care of our school/students. They had the gym ready for all of our big events, they trimmed the bushes out front and cleaned up the brush. The also engineered a way to do the senior slide show so more of the crowd could see it. Thank you!!!
FAFSA: Galatia High School has a 97% completion rate.
SUPERINTENDENT REPORT:
Hankins property: We closed the Hankins property on May 10th.
Project Updates:
Basketball goals and pads should start on June 2, 2024.
The driveway work and batting cage should start the first week of July.
The Athletic building has been insulated. Drywall will be hung and finished over the next two to three weeks. The electric hookup is tentatively scheduled for three weeks.
New light poles for the fields will be here mid-June.
The Saline County Highway Department is giving us 200-300 tons of road millings and will spread it for us.

All buses are up to date on their inspections. Bus #9 still needs an exhaust repair.
ATHLETICS:
High School Softball: The softball team hosted "Blue Out" Tournament on May 11th. There was a great turnout and won first place. Emma Stricklin was honored prior to the championship game as our only senior along with the seniors from the other four teams in the tournament. Emma was named to the All GEC team and Kyra Blades was named honorable mention to the GEC.
High School Baseball: The last game of the season on May 10th, seniors Ian Irvin and Christian McDonald were honored.
Basscats: The Basscats hosted the IHSA Bass Fishing Sectional Tournament at Lake of Egypt on May 2nd. Galatia had two teams. Brian Gibbs and Mace Ridgeway; Hollyn McCabe and Karson Baird. Congratulations to Brian Gibbs and Mace Ridgeway who won the event with a total weight of 16 lb. 9 oz., Mace caught the big bass at 5 lb. 3 oz. Holly and Karson finished fourth with 12 lb. 5 oz. Thanks to BJ Pigg for coaching and coordinating the event, Brian McCabe, Ryan Ridgeway, Allison McCabe, and Tiffany Baird for helping make the event successful.
Sports Banquets: The junior high banquet was held May 13th and the high school banquet was held May 14th.
Athletic Director Jim Foster did a great job this year organizing all of the athletic events.

NEW BUSINESS:
Solar Project
There was discussion on the proposed solar project. It was agreed to send the contract to the attorney before proceeding.
Certificates of Deposits
19. A motion was made by Richey and seconded by McCabe to reinvest Certificates of Deposit #7374 ($206,258.23) and #2204 ($350,076.10) currently held at Legence Bank for a term of 12 months at the rate of 4.30% a.p.y. Murphy-aye, McCabe-aye, Richey-aye, and Jackson-aye. Four (4) ayes, motion. carried.
Ameren Upgrades
20. A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Murphy to approve the Ameren upgrades to LED lighting for the elementary school ($610), high school ($3,744), and annex building ($900) to be paid with the sales tax fund. Ten year savings on all the buildings is approximately $54,020. McCabe-aye, Murphy- aye, Richey-aye, and Jackson-aye. Four (4) ayes, motion carried.
Policy 5:330-Vacation time
21. A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Richey to update Policy 5:330 vacation time from a monthly adjustment of .083 (beginning-year 9) to award quarterly 2.5 vacation days (10 days per year). The remaining years (10-25+) will be awarded according to a quarterly adjustment. Richey-aye, Jackson- aye, Murphy-aye, and McCabe-aye. Four (4) ayes, motion carried.
High School Electricity
22. A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Murphy to approve high school electric repairs for high school stage lighting switches and fuse box, not to exceed $55,000, to be paid from the tort fund. Richey- aye, Jackson-aye, Murphy-aye, and McCabe-aye. Four (4) ayes, motion carried.
High School Flooring
23. A motion was made by Richey and seconded by Jackson to remove current flooring that has carpet and replace with vinyl lamanent flooring, not to exceed $4,000, to be paid from the sales tax fund. Richey- aye, Murphy-aye, McCabe-aye, and Jackson-aye. Four (4) ayes, motion carried.

Field Trips
24. A motion was made by Richey and seconded by McCabe to approve the FBLA field trip to Holiday World in Santa Claus, IN on May 24th, 2024. All expenses to be paid by the FBLA activity fund. Murphy-aye, McCabe-aye, Richey-aye, and Jackson-aye. Four (4) ayes, motion carried.
25. A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Richey to approve FFA overnight trip to the FFA Convention, at Springfield IL., on June 11-13. All expenses to be paid by the FFA activity fund. Richey- aye, Murphy-aye, McCabe-aye, and Jackson-aye. Four (4) ayes, motion carried.
Server/Equipment Upgrades
26. A motion was made by Richey and seconded by McCabe to approve the QNS quote for server infrastructure upgrades ($11,350.00) and computer upgrades ($4,600.00). Murphy-aye, McCabe-aye, Richey-aye, and Jackson-aye. Four (4) ayes, motion carried.
