The Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) announced today that the state's unemployment rate increased by 0.1 percentage point to 5.0 percent in June, while nonfarm payrolls rose by 10,400 jobs. This data, provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), was released by IDES. The revised unemployment rate for May remained at 4.9 percent, and the monthly change in payrolls for May was adjusted from an initial report of 12,700 to 9,600 jobs.
In June, the industry sectors with the largest job gains were Private Education and Health Services (+7,100), Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (+3,200), and Government (+2,800). Conversely, sectors experiencing declines included Leisure and Hospitality (-1,800), Information (-1,100), and Professional and Business Services (-1,000).
“Stable payroll job growth remains a positive component of the Illinois economy,” said Deputy Governor Andy Manar. “As jobs continue to expand, creating new and diverse career opportunities, IDES stands ready to assist workers and employers.”
DCEO Director Kristin Richards echoed this sentiment: “Illinois’ labor market remains strong with consistent growth in payroll jobs.”
The state's unemployment rate was 0.9 percentage points higher than the national rate of 4.1 percent for June. Compared to a year ago when it was 4.3 percent, Illinois' unemployment rate has risen by 0.7 percentage points.
Over the past year, total nonfarm payroll jobs increased by 24,200 in Illinois. Significant gains were seen in Private Education and Health Services (+26,400), Government (+26,400), and Other Services (+8,500). However, Professional and Business Services (-27,000), Financial Activities (-7,500), and Information (-5,300) saw notable declines.
The number of unemployed workers rose to 327,900 in June—a 3.3 percent increase from the previous month—and up by 18.7 percent compared to a year ago. The labor force also saw slight increases over both periods.
IDES continues its efforts to connect jobseekers with employers through various initiatives such as job fairs and maintaining Illinois JobLink (IJL), the state’s largest job search engine.
