The Illinois Department of Innovation & Technology (DoIT) will celebrate Illinois film, acting, and STEAM at the 2024 Illinois State Fair. The event, themed "Lights, Camera, STEAM Action! A Celebration of Illinois Film, Acting & STEAM," aims to inspire fairgoers with activities focused on science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.
"There's no place like the Illinois State Fair to see what makes Illinois truly exceptional," said Governor JB Pritzker. "'Lights, Camera, STEAM Action!' perfectly captures our state's spirit, blending our rich film heritage with our commitment to innovation. It's thrilling to see the future we're building together - one where our booming film industry fuels economic growth statewide."
DoIT has partnered with organizations across the state to showcase engaging and innovative STEAM activities for all ages. The event will feature iconic actors such as John Malkovich, Bill Murray, Marlee Matlin, John Cusack, John Belushi, Harrison Ford, and Betty White. Additionally highlighted will be movies filmed in Illinois.
"We're excited to bring a unique blend of innovation, entertainment and applied learning to the Illinois State Fair this year," said DoIT Secretary and State CIO Sanjay Gupta. "We aim to captivate and inspire attendees with cutting-edge technology and creative interactive exhibits. We look forward to showcasing the incredible talent and creativity Illinois has to offer."
Starting August 8th at the Governor's Tent located at Brian Raney Avenue and Main Street:
- **August 8-10:** The Learning Technology Center will provide a 3-D printing activity inspired by Abraham Lincoln and John Malkovich. Attendees can watch a mini butter cow come to life and snap a photo with a caricature of Lincoln holding it. They will also meet Isaac Jacquez from Scott Elementary in Mannheim CUSD 83.
- **August 11:** Hanson Professional Services will present a science experiment inspired by Bill Murray's character in "Groundhog Day," focusing on weather patterns.
- **August 12:** DoIT will explore careers where vinyl meets digital innovation akin to John Cusack's quest for perfect sound.
- **August 13:** The Illinois Assistive Technology Program will demonstrate assistive technologies inspired by Marlee Matlin's roles.
- **August 14:** Google-led AI activities inspired by John Belushi’s classic films.
- **August 15-17:** A Star Wars-themed Rubik's Cube challenge hosted by the Illinois Century Network inspired by Harrison Ford’s Han Solo.
- **August 18:** Techno Tigers FIRST Robotics Team will lead a Toy Story 4-inspired robotics challenge celebrating Betty White.
These technology exhibits are free with paid admission to the fair.
