The Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) reported that the state's unemployment rate remained steady at 4.8% in April, while nonfarm payrolls saw an increase of 7,300 jobs. This data is based on preliminary figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and reflects activity for the week including April 12th.

Deputy Governor Andy Manar commented on these developments, stating, "Expanded payroll jobs and a stable unemployment rate are both further indications that the Illinois labor market and economy remain strong." He emphasized IDES's commitment to providing resources for jobseekers and employers.

In April, significant job gains were observed in Professional and Business Services (+4,900), Private Education and Health Services (+3,400), and Leisure and Hospitality (+1,900). However, declines were noted in Financial Activities (-1,300), Government (-1,100), and Manufacturing (-800).

DCEO Director Kristin Richards remarked on the situation by saying, "As payroll jobs steadily increase, DCEO continues to provide resources to support Illinois’ job seekers, workers and employers." She highlighted the strength of Illinois' economy.

The state's unemployment rate was higher than the national average of 3.9% for April. Compared to a year ago when it was 4.2%, Illinois' unemployment rate increased by 0.6 percentage points.

Over the past year, total nonfarm payroll jobs grew by 37,400 despite losses in some major industries such as Professional and Business Services (-33,100) and Trade Transportation Utilities (-6,900). Gains were recorded in sectors like Private Education Health Services (+29,200) and Government (+27,700).

IDES continues its efforts to connect jobseekers with employers through various initiatives like job fairs and maintaining Illinois JobLink (IJL), which currently lists over 89,000 available positions.
