The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is hosting a series of programs in Springfield to celebrate Women's History Month. The events aim to highlight the contributions of women throughout Illinois history and are open to individuals and groups who register in advance via Eventbrite. Participants will receive a special Women's History Month vinyl decal, which can also be collected at several locations including the Springfield Visitor Center and the Lincoln Home National Historic Site.

Natalie Phelps Finnie, Director of IDNR, stated, "Our history inspires us to break down barriers and move Illinois toward a bright future. These programs provide opportunities to learn about important women in Illinois history, from Jane Addams to the leaders of the Illinois Federation of Colored Women's Clubs, to members of Springfield's Lawrence and Lindsay families."

Among the scheduled events is "Marion Mahony and the Creation of a Capital" at the Dana-Thomas House State Historic Site on March 9 and March 16. This program will explore Mahony's role as Frank Lloyd Wright's first employee and her involvement in planning Australia's capital city.

Another event titled "Lunch and Learn: Petticoat Politics" will take place at the Lincoln-Herndon Law Office State Historic Site on March 15. This session will discuss women's early struggles for political voice before they could vote.

The Dana-Thomas House will also host evening tours focusing on its original owners, Mary Agnes Lawrence and Susan Lawrence Dana, on March 15, 22, and 29. Additionally, there will be presentations like "Illinois Daughters Who Changed History" on March 17 where visitors can view historical documents related to influential women from Illinois.

On March 24 at Vachel Lindsay Home State Historic Site, there will be an exploration into Mary Lincoln's life titled "Mary Lincoln: Springfield's First Lady." The event promises insights into her impact as a political figure during her time as First Lady.

For younger audiences or those interested in interactive activities, programs such as "Timeless Daughters: Springfield's Daughters Then and Now" are scheduled for March 23 at Dana-Thomas House. Here attendees can engage with crafts that connect them with past figures from Springfield’s history.

All events are managed by IDNR with more information available online or through contact at their office.
