Chuck Martin, a dedicated upland bird hunter and conservation advocate, has been recognized as the Illinois Recreational Access Program's (IRAP) 2023 Landowner of the Year. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources made the announcement, highlighting Martin's efforts in habitat improvement and conservation on his property in Christian County.
The award is given to landowners enrolled in IRAP who demonstrate exceptional conservation practices while allowing public access to their private lands. Martin joined the program in 2016, permitting activities such as youth hunting, turkey hunting during the third and fourth seasons, archery deer hunting, and pond fishing.
Martin attributes his commitment to land stewardship to experiences with his father during quail and pheasant hunts. Reflecting on those times when they depended on other landowners for access, he shared, "I told my dad I'm going to buy existing farmland and turn it back into habitat for wildlife." Despite initial doubts due to high land prices, with support from his wife Mary Jo, Martin now manages 70 acres aimed at supporting wildlife and providing opportunities for other hunters.
His efforts include prairie restoration, native forb plantings, prescribed burns, vegetation management, and pond stocking under IRAP guidance. Praising IRAP staff support, Martin noted their readiness to provide technical expertise: "Every single (IRAP) staff member I have worked with has done what they said they would do and more."
He also expressed satisfaction with the conduct of hunters accessing his property through IRAP: "No one has ever destroyed anything, left any trash, or caused any issues with parking." Providing memorable outdoor experiences similar to those he had with his father is a source of joy for Martin. He cherishes seeing young hunters practicing skills alongside mentors.
Martin was among seven nominees acknowledged by IRAP staff for their dedication to conserving Illinois' natural resources and facilitating public recreational use of their lands. Other nominees included Jonna Krueger from Macoupin County; Gary Kronable from Jersey County; Craig Walter from Lee County; Brad Petersburg from Jo Davies County; Grand Prairie Friends Nature Preserve in Coles County; and Steve Zaubi and family across Christian, Menard, and Macoupin counties.
