The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Office of Law Enforcement is actively seeking applicants for the role of conservation police officer trainee. These officers are responsible for enforcing state laws aimed at protecting Illinois' natural and recreational resources. With full state-wide police authority, they are trained to high standards and play a crucial role in linking IDNR with its constituencies, as well as assisting other agencies during emergencies.
Currently, IDNR plans to expand its team by 15 officers with the next class of trainees. Applications must be submitted electronically by Friday, July 26. Applicants should be at least 20 years old and have completed an associate's degree or 60 credit hours at an accredited institution. Those hired will not have arrest powers or carry firearms until they turn 21.
Certain military service members can bypass collegiate education requirements if they meet specific criteria related to their service medals or active duty experience. Detailed eligibility information is available on the IDNR website.
IDNR provides competitive pay and benefits including health care, dental and vision insurance, pension plans, employer-furnished equipment, a take-home patrol vehicle, and flexible scheduling options. The hiring process includes several stages such as physical fitness tests, interviews, medical examinations, psychological evaluations, and background checks.
Candidates not previously certified as police officers in Illinois will need to complete a paid 16-week certification at the Illinois State Police Academy followed by a 14-week Conservation Academy training.
Physical (POWER) and swim tests are scheduled across various locations in Illinois: Central Illinois on August 3-4 at Illinois College; Northern Illinois on August 10-11 at Huntley High School and Barrington High School; Southern Illinois on August 10-11 at Southern Illinois University Recreational Center.
Applicants should check their email frequently after the deadline for further instructions through the Success Factors application system. For additional information or assistance with applications, candidates may contact Conservation Police Officers Tom Davis or Isaac Gerard via phone or email.
