The Illinois Department of Transportation has announced several major projects in the Springfield area as part of the ongoing Rebuild Illinois initiative. Now in its fifth year, the program is set to invest over $80 million in eight key projects aimed at enhancing safety, mobility, and quality of life while also supporting job creation in the region.

Governor JB Pritzker highlighted the importance of these efforts, stating, "Rebuild Illinois is revitalizing communities and neighborhoods by investing in projects and people in the Springfield area and throughout the state." The governor emphasized that this initiative represents the largest capital program in Illinois history.

Several projects are expected to be completed within two years. These include improvements to the 10th Street railroad tracks at Madison and Jefferson streets, which began in April and are part of the Springfield Rail Improvements Project. Work on Peoria Road from Sangamon Avenue to Ardmore Avenue started in May with an expected completion date later this fall. Additionally, painting on Interstate 72 over the Sangamon River began around the same time.

Other projects involve resurfacing parts of Interstate 55 and patching roads such as Business I-55/Sixth Street. Repairs on Illinois 4/Veterans Parkway bridge will commence this fall, along with work on Illinois 29 over South Fork between Springfield and Rochester.

State Representative Sue Scherer commented on these developments: "The improvements to our capital city's rail and roads are long overdue, and I am proud to have helped bring them to fruition."

Launched in 2019, Rebuild Illinois aims to invest $33.2 billion over six years into upgrading transportation infrastructure across all modes. Mayor Misty Buscher expressed optimism about these initiatives: "Through the implementation of these ongoing and upcoming projects, we can reinvigorate our infrastructure."

Achievements through Year Four include approximately $12.1 billion spent on statewide improvements covering highways, bridges, and additional safety measures.

Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman urged caution for drivers during construction season: "When you see orange, stay patient, drop the devices and slow down."
