Entering the fifth year of Rebuild Illinois, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has announced several significant projects in DuPage County. These initiatives are part of a larger effort supported by Governor JB Pritzker's bipartisan capital program aimed at enhancing safety, mobility, and quality of life while creating jobs across the region.
Governor Pritzker stated, "Rebuild Illinois is revitalizing communities and neighborhoods by investing in projects and people in the DuPage County area and throughout the state." He emphasized that this program represents the largest capital investment in state history, focusing on building a resilient transportation system for future generations.
The six major projects planned for DuPage County involve an investment exceeding $53 million. They include:
1. The ongoing project on Illinois 53 (Columbine Avenue) over Great Western Trail south of North Avenue in Lombard. This involves new bridge deck construction and beam replacement, expected to be completed by fall 2024.
2. Resurfacing work on Irving Park Road from west of Mitchell Boulevard to Roselle Road in Schaumburg and Roselle. Scheduled to start in summer 2025 with completion anticipated by fall 2025.
3. Similar resurfacing efforts on Irving Park Road from Roselle Road to Baker Drive affecting Roselle, Medinah, and Itasca, also slated for summer 2025 through fall 2025.
4. Butterfield Road improvements from just west of Illinois 53 to Southbound I-355 in Glen Ellyn and Lombard will begin summer 2025 with a fall 2025 completion target.
5. Traffic signal modernization along Butterfield Road from Illinois 59 to York Road across multiple towns is set for spring through fall 2024.
6. Bridge deck resurfacing on Kingery Highway at BNSF Railroad south of Bluff Road in Lemont is planned for spring through fall 2024.
State Senator Laura Ellman commented on these developments: "With the help of Rebuild Illinois, we are investing not only in our infrastructure but also in our economies by creating good-paying jobs and improving quality of life for our residents."
State Representative Jenn Ladisch Douglass added, "I'm proud to share with the residents of my district the investments that Rebuild Illinois is bringing to them."
Launched in 2019, Rebuild Illinois plans to invest $33.2 billion over six years into various modes of transportation statewide. By Year Four, it had achieved approximately $12.1 billion worth of improvements across highways, bridges, and other areas.
Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman highlighted the importance of these projects: "These investments in the DuPage County region will strengthen our system of multimodal transportation across the state."
