The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has announced plans to reopen lanes that have been closed for construction, where feasible, during the Independence Day holiday. This initiative aims to reduce travel disruptions from 3 p.m. on Friday, June 30, until 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, July 4.
Despite these efforts, several lane closures will remain in effect over the holiday weekend. Motorists are advised to anticipate delays and plan for additional travel time in affected areas. IDOT urges drivers to remain vigilant in work zones by adhering to posted speed limits, avoiding mobile device use, and staying alert for workers and equipment.
In District 1, Chicago and Cook County will see continued lane reductions on major routes such as the Kennedy Expressway and Eisenhower Expressway. Various closures and detours are also noted across DuPage County and other districts throughout Illinois.
IDOT encourages travelers to consider alternate routes when possible to bypass construction zones. Over the next six years, IDOT plans significant improvements as part of the Rebuild Illinois capital program, investing $33.2 billion into transportation infrastructure statewide.
