The Illinois Department of Transportation, in collaboration with the Illinois State Police and local law enforcement agencies, is issuing a reminder about the dangers of impaired driving during Halloween. The campaign emphasizes the importance of sober driving with messages such as "Drive Sober" and "If you Drive High, you'll get a DUI."

Steve Travia, IDOT Director of Highways Project Implementation, stated, "Don't let this Halloween turn into a nightmare. If someone has been drinking, using cannabis or any other impairing substance, don't let them trick you into letting them drive." He highlighted that planning ahead can prevent DUIs and save lives.

According to provisional data from IDOT as of October 16, there have been 991 fatalities on Illinois roads this year. This figure is 12 fewer than the same date last year but remains higher compared to 2020 and previous years.

ISP Division of Patrol Col. Christopher Owen warned drivers about the consequences of driving under the influence: "Looking to have a fang-tastic Halloween? ISP reminds you that if you drive while under the influence, you could end up spending your night in jail, the hospital or even the morgue."

To ensure safety during Halloween festivities, officials recommend several precautions:

- If impaired, use alternative transportation options like cabs or ride-sharing services.

- Report impaired drivers by pulling over safely and calling 911.

- Ensure all vehicle occupants wear seat belts at all times.

This safety initiative is supported by federal funds distributed by IDOT and runs through October 31. It aligns with IDOT's broader "It's Not a Game" campaign addressing various traffic safety issues. More details are available at www.itsnotagameillinois.com.
