Governor JB Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) have announced a $10 million agreement with Chicago to expand the city's network of safety cameras. This initiative aims to enhance traffic safety and efficiency on both state routes and city streets.

"As governor, there is nothing more important to me than keeping Illinoisans safe—in our schools, at our parks, and on our streets," said Gov. JB Pritzker. He credited Secretary Osman and the IDOT team for reaching this agreement with Chicago, which he believes will ensure safer travel for pedestrians, motorists, and cyclists. "This is a prime example of the state and the city working hand-in-hand to safeguard our residents," he added.

Mayor Brandon Johnson emphasized that "building a better, stronger, safer Chicago means building better transit for all Chicagoans." He noted that IDOT's allocation will help improve transit by enhancing traffic monitoring capabilities and ensuring safer travel for residents.

The intergovernmental agreement allows Chicago to increase its ability to monitor traffic, manage incidents, and boost enforcement along its rights of way. The funding from IDOT will cover equipment costs, permitting, labor associated with installation, as well as maintenance needs. Under the agreement terms, Chicago will own and manage the camera infrastructure while utilizing a vendor for supplies and services.

Secretary Osman highlighted the strong relationship between IDOT and local partners under Gov. Pritzker's leadership. "This investment in safety will help reassure the public that their system of transportation is safe," he stated.
