The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has announced that certain construction-related lane closures will be lifted during the Christmas and New Year's holidays to reduce travel disruptions. Non-emergency closures will be suspended from 3 p.m. on December 22 until 11:59 p.m. on December 25, and again from 3 p.m. on December 29 until 11:59 p.m. on January 1.
Despite these efforts, some lane closures will remain in effect over the holiday period. Motorists are advised to expect delays and allow extra time for travel through affected areas. Drivers should remain vigilant, adhere to posted speed limits, avoid using mobile devices, and stay alert for workers and equipment in work zones.
In District 1, notable closures include ramps and lanes in Chicago's Bishop Ford Freeway, Du Sable Lake Shore Drive, Kennedy Expressway, as well as various roads in Cook County such as National Parkway in Schaumburg and Franklin Avenue in Franklin Park.
Additional lane reductions are reported across other counties including DuPage County's I-55 at Lemont Road in Woodridge, Kane County's eastbound Chicago Street in Elgin, Lake County's Grand Avenue between Cedar Lake Road and Lake Avenue in Lake Villa, McHenry County's Souwanas Trail in Algonquin, Will County’s Moen Avenue between Mound Road and Larkin Avenue in Rockdale among others.
In Districts 2 through 9 there are various ongoing lane reductions or road closures with detours posted where necessary. Specific locations include I-80 near Mineral in Bureau County (District 3), Eastbound War Memorial Drive at Adams Street in Peoria (District 4), Westbound I-74 ramp to northbound I-57 in Champaign (District 5), U.S. 51 over I-70 in Vandalia (District 7), U.S. 60/62 bridge over the Mississippi River at Cairo (District 9).
IDOT is working under Gov. Pritzker's Rebuild Illinois capital program which aims to invest $41 billion into the state's transportation network over six years with $27.03 billion earmarked for roads and bridges this fiscal year alone.
Accomplishments through Year Four of Rebuild Illinois have seen approximately $12.1 billion spent on improvements statewide affecting highways, bridges, and safety enhancements.
