The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is currently conducting pothole repair operations on state highways and interstates across Illinois. This work necessitates drivers to slow down, exercise caution, and make way for maintenance crews.

"Potholes unfortunately can be anticipated to form as a result of the weather patterns at this time of year," stated Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman. "We will be doing our best to make repairs as they develop, but we ask for your cooperation as well to ensure everyone's safety. Pothole patching operations are work zones. Please be on alert for the orange IDOT trucks, reducing your speed and moving over so they have room to work."

The recent bout of heavy snow, rain, and freezing temperatures has led to an increase in potholes throughout the state. Potholes typically form when water infiltrates or settles beneath pavement surfaces. The freeze-thaw cycles cause asphalt or concrete to shift or break, resulting in potholes when vehicles drive over these weakened areas.

Motorists should anticipate brief lane closures where patching is underway and allow extra travel time through these areas. Drivers are advised to heed flaggers and signs, obey posted speed limits, and remain vigilant for workers and equipment. If maintenance vehicles are encountered, slowing down and providing space is mandated by law.

IDOT is dedicated to addressing potholes swiftly whenever their maintenance teams are not engaged in snow plowing or road treatment activities during this season. Monitoring pavement conditions and repairing potholes remains a priority.

To report a pothole on a state highway or interstate, individuals can call 1-800-452-IDOT (4368). Additional resources include viewing a video on how potholes form via IDOT's YouTube channel or obtaining regular updates on statewide road conditions at www.gettingaroundillinois.com. Social media updates are also available through IDOT's Facebook and Twitter accounts.
