Entering the fifth year of Rebuild Illinois, the Illinois Department of Transportation has announced several projects in Kane County. These initiatives are part of a larger effort supported by Governor JB Pritzker's capital program, which aims to enhance safety, mobility, and quality of life while creating jobs in the region. The six major projects represent an investment exceeding $177 million.
Governor Pritzker stated, "Rebuild Illinois is revitalizing communities and neighborhoods by investing in projects and people in the Kane County area and throughout the state." He emphasized that this is the largest capital program in state history, aiming to build a more resilient transportation system for future generations.
The projects scheduled for completion by 2026 include:
- Butterfield Road (Illinois 56) west of Church Road to DuPage County line in Aurora: An ongoing resurfacing project with ADA improvements began this spring and is expected to finish later this fall.
- U.S. 20 at State Street (Illinois 31) in Elgin: A bridge replacement project started this summer with completion anticipated next spring.
- Lincoln Highway (Illinois 38) from Main Street (Illinois 47) to First Street (Illinois 31) in Elburn: A crack and joint sealing project began this summer and will conclude later this fall.
- Illinois 47/U.S. 30 from Jericho Road to south of Galena Road in Yorkville: Reconstruction is set to start summer 2024 and finish summer 2026.
- Illinois 47/U.S. 30 from Cross Street to Jericho Road in Sugar Grove: Reconstruction will begin fall 2024 with completion expected by fall 2026.
- U.S. 20 from Illinois 31 to east of Grace Street in Elgin: This includes bridge replacement starting summer 2024 with an estimated completion by fall 2026.
State Senator Cristina Castro remarked on the importance of these developments, saying, "U.S. 20 is one of the busiest thoroughfares in Kane County," adding that new bridges will ensure a resilient network for decades. State Representative Barbara Hernandez noted her satisfaction with progress despite traffic inconveniences, stating that improvements make streets safer and easier to navigate. State Senator Don DeWitte highlighted his experience on the Regional Transportation Authority board as underscoring the importance of a robust transportation network since Rebuild Illinois began.
Since its inception in 2019, Rebuild Illinois has allocated $33.2 billion over six years into upgrading transportation infrastructure across various modes including roads, bridges, transit systems, waterways, railways, aviation facilities, and pedestrian paths. Achievements through Year Four include approximately $12.1 billion spent on improving highways and bridges statewide.
Transportation Secretary Omer Osman encouraged patience during construction season: "If you are driving in Illinois this construction season, you will be driving through work zones."
