Under the guidance of Governor JB Pritzker and Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) made significant strides in modernizing transportation across the state in 2023. This progress was largely driven by Rebuild Illinois, a capital program initiated in 2019 with an investment of $45 billion aimed at enhancing highways, transit systems, railroads, airports, waterways, and other transportation options.
Governor Pritzker emphasized the importance of this initiative: "Here in Illinois, we're on a mission to modernize our infrastructure and make transportation more reliable for commuters, families, and businesses." The governor noted that 2023 marked another year of record investments towards maintaining various modes of transportation.
In July 2023, IDOT released a $41 billion multi-year plan covering fiscal years 2024-2029. This plan is notable for its comprehensive approach to improving roads and bridges as well as aviation and rail services. Secretary Osman remarked on the year's achievements: "The past year at IDOT was another for the history books under Gov. Pritzker."
Key projects included improvements to highways such as I-80 in Will County and I-39 in Rockford. In Chicago, work continued on the Kennedy Expressway rehabilitation project. Additionally, high-speed rail between Chicago and St. Louis saw completion with track upgrades allowing speeds up to 110 mph.
Efforts also extended beyond roadways with multimodal initiatives like downstate transit enhancements funded through Rebuild Illinois. These efforts are designed to improve service while fostering economic growth throughout local communities.
Awards recognized IDOT's work including honors for projects like Chicago's Jane Byrne Interchange reconstruction. Public awareness campaigns also received accolades from industry associations.
IDOT remains committed to diversity with events like February's "Today's Challenge, Tomorrow's Reward" conference supporting minority-owned businesses. Workshops were offered to Disadvantaged Business Enterprises aiming to strengthen their skills for state project bids.
