The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has announced the commencement of the final phase of reconstruction on westbound Interstate 70 in Effingham County. The project, stretching from east of the I-57/70 interchange to just east of the Cumberland/Effingham County line, is scheduled to begin on April 9, contingent on weather conditions. The timing aims to avoid interference with the April 8 solar eclipse, expected to draw significant crowds.
Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman stated, "We are excited to get one step closer to delivering this vital project to an important part of the state. These improvements will help the flow of goods and services throughout the area and provide a safer road for everyone who relies on I-70." He emphasized collaboration with local officials in adding safety measures designed to reduce crashes in the work zone and urged drivers to stay alert during construction.
Preparation activities have included tree trimming and shoulder closures, along with intermittent lane closures in eastbound lanes for traffic control device placement. Starting April 9, traffic will be limited to one lane each way on newly rebuilt eastbound lanes while westbound lanes undergo reconstruction.
The work zone will feature enhanced safety measures such as dynamic message signs guiding I-57 traffic and temporary rumble strips intended to maintain driver awareness. Illinois State Police presence will be increased throughout construction season for monitoring compliance with traffic regulations.
Coordination between IDOT and local emergency services has resulted in additional safety features requested by these agencies, including pull-off locations within the work zone for handling vehicle incidents efficiently.
Drivers should anticipate potential congestion near the work zone until project completion this fall. They are encouraged to remain vigilant, avoid distractions, adhere strictly to posted signage, and maintain caution around workers and equipment.
Funded through Governor JB Pritzker's Rebuild Illinois capital program, this $50 million improvement involves reconstructing seven miles in both directions and replacing bridges over Montrose Blacktop. Over six years, Rebuild Illinois plans extensive enhancements across highways and bridges statewide.
