The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has joined forces with the Illinois State Police and over 200 local law enforcement agencies to emphasize the importance of road safety during Distracted Driving Awareness Month. This initiative, which runs throughout April, aims to enforce laws against texting and distracted driving under the campaign slogan "Drop it and Drive."
Steve Travia, IDOT's Director of Highways and Chief Engineer, highlighted the significance of this campaign by stating, "Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of crashes on our roads today." He further explained that during this awareness month, police will increase their efforts to stop individuals who are caught texting while driving. Travia reiterated the campaign's message: “U Drive. U Text. U Pay.”
Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reveals that between 2012 and 2021, around 32,000 lives were lost in crashes involving distracted drivers. The risk is notably higher for individuals aged 16 to 24. To prevent such incidents, motorists are advised to pull over safely if they need to text or appoint a passenger as a designated texter.
Col. Chris Owen from the ISP Division of Patrol also warned about the dangers of using phones while driving. "While driving, many of us are tempted to check our phone, just quickly when we hear that ding of notification," he said. He emphasized that even a quick glance at a phone could lead to fatal accidents. Owen urged drivers to prioritize their safety over any messages on their phones.
To assist drivers in maintaining focus on the road, several tips have been provided: pull over safely if expecting or needing to send a text; avoid engaging in social media activities while driving; and use your phone's "Do Not Disturb" feature if necessary.
This campaign against distracted driving is supported by federal traffic safety funds managed by IDOT.
