On April 9, 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced the finalization of a rule that strengthens requirements for web and mobile accessibility. This new regulation updates Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), mandating that state and local governments adhere to the World Wide Web Consortium Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA.
The rule allows for limited exceptions concerning archived or restricted documents and grants governments two to three years to comply, depending on their size.
In Illinois, the Illinois Information Technology Accessibility Act (IITAA) already mandates compliance with WCAG 2.0 Level AA. The state plans to update IITAA soon to reference WCAG 2.1 in alignment with the new DOJ rule.
Further details can be found in the DOJ Fact Sheet and on Accessibility (Illinois.gov).
