The Illinois Information Technology Accessibility Act (IITAA) mandates a review of its standards every three years. This review aims to incorporate advancements in information technology and accessibility techniques. In November 2023, the IITAA Standards Workgroup advised updating these standards following the finalization of a proposed rule by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) regarding web and mobile accessibility under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

On April 24, 2024, the DOJ released its rule, requiring states to adhere to the World Wide Web Consortium’s Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA. The rule will take effect on June 24, 2024.

In response, Illinois updated its IITAA 2.1 Standards on April 24, 2024. The update involves changing references from WCAG 2.0 to WCAG 2.1 and will also be effective from June 24, 2024. Post this date, any information technology developed, purchased, or provided by Illinois must comply with WCAG 2.1 Level AA.
