The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has announced plans to reopen lanes previously closed for construction during the Memorial Day holiday weekend, where possible. The aim is to reduce travel disruptions. Non-emergency closures will be suspended from 3 p.m. on Friday, May 26, until 11:59 p.m. on Monday, May 29.
However, several lane closures will remain in place throughout the weekend. Motorists should expect delays and are advised to allow extra time for their journeys through affected areas. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changes in conditions and signs within work zones, adhere to posted speed limits, avoid using mobile devices, and stay alert for workers and equipment.
In District 1's City of Chicago, various ramps and lanes remain closed or reduced along major routes such as the Bishop Ford Freeway, DuSable Lake Shore Drive, Pulaski Road, Kennedy Expressway, and others.
Cook County also has ongoing lane reductions at key intersections including 183rd Street at Pulaski Road in Country Club Hills and Chicago Avenue over Des Plaines River Road between First and Thatcher avenues.
DuPage County sees all ramps closed at I-55 at Lemont Road in Woodridge with traffic managed by temporary signals.
Lake County maintains lane reductions on Illinois 59/U.S. 12 just north of Belvidere Road in Lakemoor among other locations.
Will County continues with multiple road closures including Moen Avenue between Mound Road and Larkin Avenue in Rockdale.
Other districts across Illinois report similar continued lane reductions or closures due to ongoing construction projects.
Motorists are encouraged to consider alternate routes when feasible to avoid work areas. Over the next six years, IDOT plans improvements spanning more than 2,500 miles of highway and nearly 10 million square feet of bridge deck as part of the Rebuild Illinois capital program which is investing $33.2 billion into transportation infrastructure. Achievements so far include approximately $8.6 billion worth of improvements statewide covering thousands of miles of highway and hundreds of bridges.
