The Illinois State Fair has announced initiatives to make the event more accessible for individuals with sensory processing disorders. The measures aim to create an inclusive environment for those who experience sensory overload, such as individuals with autism, anxiety, and PTSD.

Rebecca Clark, the Illinois State Fair Manager, stated, "From the moment you arrive at the Illinois State Fair you are greeted by the sounds of summer including music, laughter, and crowds of families." She emphasized that this year’s fair will include spaces where attendees can find support and have a positive experience. Local partners Hope School and Springfield Clinic have been instrumental in developing these initiatives.

On August 12th, during Kids Day, Sunflower Hours will take place from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., offering a softer environment for those with sensory sensitivities. Entertainment during this time is included in the admission price and will be adapted to reduce noise levels. A silent dance party hosted by Neuhoff Media's 99.7 The Mix will allow participants to enjoy music at their preferred volume using wireless headphones.

Thomas Thebault of North American Midway Entertainment expressed commitment to inclusivity: "Carnival rides have long been a part of the fabric of our lives... NAME is honored to work alongside various organizations...to help provide family fun entertainment."

During Sunflower Hours, stickers will be distributed as visual cues for staff to assist those needing extra support. These stickers are optional but required for carnival ride access.

Additionally, a Sensory Station located in the Emmerson Building will offer resources like weighted blankets and noise-canceling headphones throughout all eleven days of the fair. This quiet zone aims to help individuals regroup when needed.

Amanda Brott from Hope School shared her enthusiasm: "It is a privilege for Hope to be partnering with the Illinois Department of Agriculture in hosting Sunflower Hours...to ensure that everyone...are able to access and enjoy this year's event!"

Further details on these initiatives can be found on Sensory Friendly Fair (illinois.gov). The Illinois State Fair begins on August 10th in Springfield.
