Heading into the final weekend of summer, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), along with the Illinois State Police and local police departments, is increasing enforcement efforts to combat impaired driving. This initiative is part of the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign running through Labor Day weekend.

Steve Travia, IDOT Director of Highways Project Implementation, emphasized the dangers associated with impaired driving: "Driving under the influence of alcohol, marijuana or other impairing substances is a serious crime because it creates an extremely dangerous situation for the driver and everyone on our roads. It also comes with severe consequences for the offender."

Authorities are urging motorists to follow safety tips during this period. If planning to consume drugs or alcohol, individuals should ensure they have a sober driver or use a taxi, rideshare service, or community sober ride program. Observers who spot impaired drivers are encouraged to contact law enforcement immediately. Friends should be reminded not to travel with impaired drivers; if necessary, intervene by taking their keys.

Col. Margaret McGreal from ISP Division of Patrol highlighted additional measures being taken: "With Labor Day being the unofficial end of summer, there's temptation to celebrate and then get behind the wheel," she said. "Troopers will be strictly enforcing the Fatal Four violations - DUI, speeding, distracted driving and occupant restraint laws - in an attempt to keep our roadways safe for all motorists."

Motorists are also reminded about seatbelt regulations under Illinois law as part of concurrent enforcement efforts titled "Click It or Ticket." Passengers must buckle up both in front and back seats.

This enforcement effort coincides with IDOT's "It's Not a Game" campaign aimed at raising awareness about impaired driving risks. Further information on seatbelt regulations can be found at www.buckleupillinois.org.
