The Governor's Sale of Champions, an annual event in Springfield, Illinois, highlights the dedication and efforts of young individuals in the agriculture sector. Governor JB Pritzker and First Lady MK Pritzker purchased the Grand Champion Steer for $105,000, marking their fourth consecutive win. This purchase ties a record set by First Lady MK Pritzker in 2021. The couple also encouraged attendees to contribute towards champion exhibitors to support youth advancement in agriculture.
Jerry Costello II, Director of the Illinois Department of Agriculture, stated, "These exhibitors are the future of agriculture in our state and represent the best of the best." He added that seeing youth rewarded for their hard work is his favorite aspect of the Illinois State Fair.
The proceeds from this event assist exhibitors with college education or reinvestment into future projects. CME Group contributed $45,000 in scholarships this year as part of its decade-long support. Beck's seed company also provided a $20,000 scholarship divided among champions.
Additionally, various commodities were auctioned at this year's event. The Grand Champion Steer will be donated to Feeding Illinois and distributed to food banks statewide.
Below are some notable results from both auctions:
- Champion Queso Blanco Cheese by V&V Supreme was sold for $850.
- Champion Bacon by Behrmann Meat & Processing fetched $3,100.
- Grand Champion Rabbit Market Pen by Chesney Thorton was bought for $6,500.
- Land of Lincoln Grand Champion Barrow & Grand Champion Barrow by Hunter Shike reached a price of $25,000.
