The Illinois Department of Transportation and the Illinois State Police have issued a warning to the public regarding a significant winter storm expected to hit the state starting tonight. The storm is predicted to bring dangerous travel conditions, including heavy snowfall, severe cold, and high winds that will persist into the weekend.
"Before heading out during any severe weather event, always ask yourself: Is this trip necessary or can it be postponed?" advised Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman. He emphasized that while IDOT teams will be working hard to manage road conditions, travelers should be prepared for delays and potential vehicle breakdowns.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for much of northern Illinois from tonight through Friday. Snowfall is expected to range from 2 to 12 inches across the region, with heavier accumulations north of Interstate 80 and in northwest Illinois. Chicago could see between 3 and 8 inches of snow, while central and southern parts of the state may experience significant rainfall.
Starting Friday, wind gusts up to 50 mph are anticipated, which could lead to blowing snow and reduced visibility. Temperatures are forecasted to drop below zero degrees with wind chills ranging from minus 10 to minus 35. These conditions will reduce the effectiveness of road treatment materials, leading to icy roads throughout the weekend.
For those who must travel during this period, authorities recommend driving cautiously by slowing down, increasing braking distances, and maintaining space between vehicles. Motorists are also urged not to crowd plows on the road.
Statewide preparations include over 1,800 trucks and equipment ready for road treatment operations. "Driving in winter weather, whether it's ice or snow, can be dangerous for you and others on the road," said ISP Director Brendan F. Kelly. He advised drivers to take it slow and allow extra time for their journeys.
Travelers are encouraged to check current road conditions via GettingAroundIllinois.com or follow IDOT updates on social media platforms like Facebook and X. It is also advisable for travelers to inform someone about their travel plans and pack essential supplies such as warm clothing, blankets, food, water, first-aid kits, washer fluid, ice scrapers along with fully charged phones or chargers.
Additional safety tips include wearing seat belts at all times—it's both a legal requirement and crucial protection in case of an accident—and avoiding distractions by putting away mobile devices while driving.
In case of involvement in an accident during these hazardous conditions: remain inside your vehicle as exiting near busy roads poses significant risks.
