The Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) has reported an increase in the state's unemployment rate to 4.4% in September, a rise of 0.3 percentage points from August. Despite this, nonfarm payrolls saw an increase of 9,500 jobs, reaching a record high and surpassing pre-pandemic levels according to preliminary data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In August, the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.1%, while the monthly change in payrolls was revised upwards from -100 to +3,800 jobs. The September figures reflect activity for the week including the 12th.

Significant job gains were observed in sectors such as Trade, Transportation and Utilities (+3,400), Manufacturing (+2,500), and Leisure and Hospitality (+2,100). However, there were declines in Professional and Business Services (-2,200), Construction (-300), and Mining (-100).

Deputy Governor Andy Manar commented on the situation: “The Illinois labor market continues to benefit from significant, steady long-term job growth throughout the state, motivating and mobilizing jobseekers eager to reconnect with the workforce.” He added that IDES is ready to assist workers and employers with necessary services.

Kristin Richards, Director of DCEO, stated: “Momentum is growing in the labor market as Illinois’ payroll jobs reach a record high," emphasizing that businesses continue creating jobs supported by a skilled workforce.

The state's unemployment rate remains higher than the national average by 0.6 percentage points; nationally it was steady at 3.8% for September. Compared to last year’s figures when it stood at 4.6%, Illinois' current rate marks a decrease of 0.2 percentage points.

Over the past year, nonfarm payroll jobs increased by 79,400 across most industries. Educational and Health Services led with +36,900 new positions followed by Government (+29,900) and Leisure and Hospitality (+27,300). Meanwhile Professional and Business Services (-20,300), Manufacturing (-7,200), and Information (-4,900) saw declines.

As of September's end date calculations indicate that there are currently about 282,500 unemployed individuals within Illinois—a rise of +6.1% since last month but down -4.7% compared with one year ago figures—while labor force participation showed little variation month-over-month or year-over-year respectively decreasing only marginally at around -0.l%.
