The Illinois Department of Agriculture has announced that the Du Quoin State Fair continues to be a significant economic contributor to southern Illinois. Despite challenges posed by extreme weather conditions, which led to the cancellation of the annual Twilight Parade and adjustments in scheduling, this year's fair attracted over 166,000 attendees.
Governor JB Pritzker highlighted the fair's success, stating, "Once again, the Du Quoin State Fair broke records and exceeded expectations—hosting more than 166,000 people and bringing in hundreds of thousands of dollars." He emphasized the event's role in supporting the regional economy and affirmed his administration's commitment to its future success.
Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton added, "Rain, shine or heatwave, the Du Quoin State Fair harvested the fun for another successful year." She noted that attendance figures reflect southern Illinois' offerings and agriculture's unifying impact.
The fair generated over $417,000 from ticketed events. Performances by Dustin Lynch, Larry the Cable Guy, and Flo Rida contributed significantly to this revenue increase. The overall economic impact is estimated at $6 million annually, including $2 million in wages and salaries and substantial sales tax revenue.
IDOA Director Jerry Costello expressed pride in the staff’s efforts: "To maintain the level of success established during last year's 100th celebration is incredible."
Looking ahead to April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will provide an opportunity for increased tourism. The fairgrounds are preparing for this event with plans for a reservation system for over 1,000 campsites.
The next Du Quoin State Fair is scheduled from August 23 to September 2, 2024. Further details can be found on their website or Facebook page.
