The Illinois State Museum in Springfield is set to reopen its main location to the public on Monday, November 4. The museum had been temporarily closed due to a plumbing construction project. Visitors can access the museum at 502 S. Spring St. from 9 a.m. on Monday. Operating hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and noon to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. Notably, the museum will remain open on Tuesday, November 5, which is a state employee holiday.
Despite the reopening, some exhibits will remain temporarily closed as construction continues, including the Mary Ann MacLean Play Museum. Updates on exhibit availability can be found on the museum's website and Facebook page, with the project anticipated to conclude by early March.
Jenn Edginton, interim director of the Illinois State Museum, expressed enthusiasm for welcoming back visitors: "The Illinois State Museum belongs to everyone, and our staff is excited to welcome visitors back," she said. "Admission is always free, so stop in to rediscover your favorite exhibits and learn something about Illinois that's completely new to you."
In addition to reopening its doors, the museum's On the Road series will continue during construction, offering programming throughout the community. Information about events and exhibit schedules is available online.
Founded in 1877, the Illinois State Museum aims to inspire exploration of Illinois' history and present-day life while promoting cultural and natural resource stewardship. It operates under accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums and is part of the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience.
