Juan David Pava has been a part of the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) for over 15 years, starting as a research engineer in the Bureau of Materials and Physical Research. He then transitioned to the role of research implementation engineer before moving to the Bureau of Safety Programs and Engineering as a work zone safety engineer. In 2017, he became the Safety Programs Unit Chief.

Pava was born in Bogota, Colombia, and moved with his family to Miami in 2002, where he attended high school. Reflecting on his current position, Pava stated: "I lead the units that take care of vulnerable road user safety, work zone safety and railroad-highway crossing safety programs statewide." His role involves analyzing potential safety improvements and supporting state policies through various forms of guidance.

When asked about the impact of his work, Pava said: "I find it very fulfilling to know that the programs we administer are assisting stakeholders to develop and implement safer projects throughout the state." He expressed enjoyment in collaborating with colleagues at IDOT who have contributed to his professional growth.

Pava highlighted his efforts over the past year and a half in developing a program focused on vulnerable road user safety. He emphasized: "I hope consideration of safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and other nonmotorized users continues to expand in project development."

Regarding his department's contributions, Pava explained: "The Bureau of Safety Programs and Engineering spends a lot of effort developing tools to help assist in decision-making and prioritization." This approach ensures that safety is integral to every project.

His educational background includes a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. Pava remains active within industry organizations and has presented at national conferences such as the Transportation Research Board National Conference.

Outside work, Pava enjoys spending time with family, playing pickleball, and cycling through central Illinois.
