The Illinois Department of Labor (IDOL) has issued a reminder to employers and job seekers about the upcoming salary transparency law. Starting January 1, 2025, employers with 15 or more employees are required to include pay scale and benefit information in their job postings.
This mandate stems from an amendment to the Equal Pay Act of 2003, which was included in HB 3129. The bill was passed by the General Assembly and signed into law by Governor JB Pritzker in 2023.
"Governor Pritzker and the General Assembly continue to take bold action toward eliminating gender and racial wage gaps," stated IDOL Director Jane Flanagan. "This legislation will increase wage transparency in the job search process and workplace."
Individuals who find a job posting lacking the necessary salary and benefit details can file a complaint with IDOL. Complaints must be submitted within one year of the violation, along with supporting evidence such as a link, picture, or screenshot of the offending post.
"Pay transparency is the key to ending wage discrimination and ensuring every employee gets fair pay for a fair day's work," commented State Representative Mary Beth Canty (D-Arlington Heights). "A more transparent workplace that empowers employees is better for everyone."
If IDOL determines that a job posting does not comply with these requirements, they will inform the employer of the complaint and provide a deadline for rectifying the issue.
