The Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) announced that the state will participate in the IRS Direct File service starting January 27, 2025. This initiative will allow nearly two million eligible taxpayers in Illinois to electronically prepare and file their 2024 federal tax returns at no cost.

The program also provides a connection to MyTax Illinois, the state's free income tax filing system, enabling taxpayers to complete their state returns after filing their federal taxes. The Direct File service aims to help working families prepare and file their taxes electronically without incurring fees from tax preparation companies.

IDOR is a state agency responsible for administering tax laws, collecting state and local taxes, and overseeing the distribution of tax revenues to various public funds and local governments in Illinois.
